Class Reflection = 11th & 18th February 2013

11th February 2013,the first english lesson in second semester.
The first meeting with Prof.Dr.Marsigit,M.A was a moment where spent almost an entire hour lesson to know each other. Beside told us about himself and his family, Mr. Marsigit also told us about "what will and we need to do in this english lesson?"  Many things that we will and need to do, one of them is needed to make a reflection. Our reflection must contain what happen or what are we doing in the classroom. The purpose of this reflection is to check our understanding about the lecture.
From this first meeting, there are two quotes from Mr. Marsigit that most impressive for me. "Construct your own concept to improve your life" and "It's better get a mistake when doing something, than doing nothing."

18th February 2013, the second lesson with Mr. Marsigit
In this lesson, we mostly talk about the perception of Mr. Marsigit. One of his perception is 'language is life'. If we want to master the language well, the best way is using life approach ( or sosiology approach ) that include movement, effort, writing, listening, talking, reading, understanding, etc. Mr. Marsigit also stressed out that we must construct our own concept. Not only that, mr.marsigit also said that if we want to get good experience, then we must have a good will, attitude, and develope our knowledge and skill. If we describe that statement into a scheme, it would be like this
Good will + attitude + knowledge + skill = experience
One of valuable things that i could learn and get from Mr.marsigit that is "myself is the one who improve my english ability." It means that i need to leave my old ways in learning. I must be an active student who not only received knowledge from teacher but also searching my own knowledge. I also must keep praying because it is the foundation of will, and good will can help us to get a best experience. Last but not least I have to be myself, not rely on the others.

Pembelajaran Matematika Seperti Apa yang Kita Harapkan di SD?

What Kind Of Mathematics Learning That We Expect In Elementary School?
By : Prof. Dr. Marsigit, M.A
Reflection By : iLania Eka Andari

I agree with the statement that teachers in Indonesia need to change their way of teaching, especially how to teach math to elementary school students.

Different from elementary school children in other countries, elementary school children in Indonesia tend to be afraid and hate towards mathematics. One of the reasons is,  most of teachers in Indonesia use expository method, the teachers only explain the material, giving formulas to memorize and give question with the answer.

Whereas we know that children in elementary school age learning through direct experience. They can understand the material  with the help of concrete objects. Therefore,  teachers in Indonesia have to change the pattern of mathematics learning that they give to students.

Rather than asking children to memorize that 1/2 is bigger than 1/4 and 1/4 is bigger than 1/5 , is better if we demonstrated with concrete object. Such as we cut pies, apples or other food into halves, fourths, fifths and so on, after that we ask "which one is bigger? Which one is the biggest?" through that experience, children will be easier to understand the material.

With such learning methods, children can learn to analyze a problem, or find a solution, without having crammed with many formulas.
