Class Reflection = 11th March 2013

In this meeting, we watched some video. From that video, we must make a reflection. Not only that, we also need to identify the video, whether that video is showing an innovative way of learning or the traditional one.

1.    What you know abot math?

I think this video is one kind of innovative way of learning. Why? Because this video not only tell us, as a viewer, about math, but this video is seems like an interactive video. It make an interaction with the viewer through a song with tittle “What You Know About Math”. In other words we can say that this video is like a facilities for us to learn more about mathematics.

This Video, show that math is about plus (+), minus (-), multiply (x), or divide (÷). Not only about significant figures or trigonometry. But math is also about how we use a calculator to calculate the value of ln(x) ,  , or to simplify. Even our test’s score is also a math.

Time we spend when we are waiting, the weight of the bag that we are holding, they are also math. We know all about math, I know all about math, because everything in our surrounding is a math J

2.    The relationship of degree and radian

I think this video is a kind of the traditional way of learning, because this video is just like a teacher tell about degree and radian, there is no interactive side of this video. Ok, they (the video maker) try to make some interesting or even a funny part, like when the cast of the video lay in the chair and say "welcome back to the class" and then suddenly they act they are swimming. Maybe some people think that "oh it's funny" or it's something that entertain. But in my oppinion, it's very absurd thing.

This video is tell about definition of degree, definition of full revolution in a clock, definition of radian, how we measure a degree with a radian ( or in other word how we convert a degree to radian and vice versa)

Beyond the fact that this video is boring ( at least it's boring in my oppinion), fortunately there are still some part of this video that a little interesting. Like the part when they show a 90o or 180o with a jet trajectory. It's can make the student, as a viewer, easier to understand about the material.

3.    Limits by inspection

Like the second video, this video is a kind of traditional way of teaching. Although is not absurd like the second video, but it's still a little boring ( i think). Why? Because there is nothing interactive side or even an interesting part in this video. When you watch this video is like you are in the class watching your teacher explain about limits, you are just sitting in silence.

Overall this video show about how to calculate the value of limit using a shortcut. We use this shortcut to save our time in the test and of course is easier to calculate when we use this shortcut method.

If we are want to use this shortcut, there are two conditions that must be fullfilled. That are :

a.                   X is approaching (goes to) infinite positive or infinite negative

b.                   Limit

There are three kind of shortcut.

a.       If the biggest power of X in numerator is greater than the biggest power of X in denominator, then the value of limit is infinite (∞)

b.      If the biggest power of X in numerator is less than the biggest power of X in denominator, then the value of limit is zero (0)

c.       If the biggest power of X in numerator and the biggest power of X in denominator is the same, then the value of limit is with  is a constanta of the biggest power of X in numerator and   is a constanta of the biggest power of X in denominator.

4.    Finding the Golden X

The fourth video is how to finding X in equation with shortcut method ( or usually called as Golden X method ). I think this video is still one kind of video that show us a traditional way of learning. Even i think that the explanation in this video is very boring.

Why? Because this video is just showing someone explain about how can we finding X in equation through some method like add any constanta or whether get variable in each side.

Although the way of explanation in this video is very boring, but actually the material is very useful and interesting.

5.    Integer

The next video is explain about integer. In my own thinking, this video is a combination between innovative way of learning and the traditional way of learning. Because sometimes, this video show us an interactive side and an interesting part, but the other time it just like a teacher who give explanation to their student.

Integer is a whole number plus the negative of whole number. We know that whole number can’t be negative, so when we say that integer is a whole number plus the negative of whole number it means that integer is consist of positive number, negative number, and also zero.

This video is not only explain about the definition of integer , but also explain about number line. Then, what is number line? Number line is a vertical or horizontal line that have a marked in every internal, number line has no end.

We also get explanation about unit digits, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on, in this video. And the explanation about this is showed in very interesting way. They show about unit digits and it’s friends, using a door animation (this is one of interesting part that i think can make this video as an innovative one).

6.    Exponent

I can say many oppinion about this video, but i can make sure that this is show one of a traditional way of teaching. Why? Yeah, it’s just like the other reason. This video just showing someone explain about exponent without giving any interactive or interesting part (well, it’s just just my oppinion, although i’m sure that most of you agree with me).

Essence of this video is how to calculate the value of the exponent, that’s all.

7.    Function

The last video is about function. Function is relation that consist of equalities and inequalities. In a function there are two variables, that is x and  y. In function y is must be by it self. When you already know the value of x, then you can find the value of y.

All that explanation, can we get while we are watching this last video. Overall the material in this video is useful ( actually all material in all the video that we watch, is very useful, i think) but again and again, i must say that the explanation in this video is very boring and this video is obviously one of a traditional way of learning.
