Memang benar adanya bahwa matematika dan bahasa itu tidak
bisa terpisahkan. Seperti yang telah disebutkan, bahwa matematika akan lebih
mudah dipelajari jika menggunakan bahasa ibu yang kemudian dapat dikembangkan
ke bahasa lain ( seperti bahasa inggris yang merupakan bahasa internasional ).
Akan tetapi menurut pemikiran saya, yang membuat bahasa dan matematika tidak
dapat dipisahkan adalah karena matematika itu sendiri merupakan sebuah bahasa.
Melalui simbol-simbol yang dimilikinya, matematika menjadi sebuah bahasa global
(yang bahkan lebih global dibandingkan bahasa inggris).
Sebagai contoh ada dua orang yang bertemu di suatu tempat.
Masing-masing dari mereka berasal dari Indonesia dan Arab. Saat itu mereka
berdua berbicara tentang 'multiply'.Tentunya kita tahu bahwa dalam bahasa
Indonesia, 'multiply' berarti perkalian. Namun, dalam bahasa Arab 'multiply'
selain berarti sebagai perkalian, dapat juga diartikan sebagai hit/memukul
(dalam bahasa Indonesia juga terdapat kata bahasa Inggris yang bermakna ganda,
contohnya to sanction yang dapat berarti mengijinkan dan juga melarang). Hal
tersebut dapat menyebabkan kerancuan, 5 multiply 3 dapat berubah menjadi 5
memukul 3. Akan berbeda ceritanya jika 5 multiply 3 dituliskan dalam bentuk 5 X
3. Kemungkinan untuk salah menginterpretasikan sangat kecil (bahkan menurut
saya itu tidak mungkin). Bukankah contoh sederhana tersebut menjadi sebuah
bukti nyata bahwa matematika adalah sebuah bahasa global yang bahkan lebih
global daripada bahasa inggris yang merupakan bahasa international. Matematika
adalah bahasa yang dapat dipahami banyak orang (bahkan orang-orang yang hanya
memahami bahasa ibu mereka, bisa memahami bahasa matematika).
Akan tetapi mempelajari matematika dalam bahasa inggris,
(sebagai bentuk pengembangan pelajaran matematika dengan bahasa ibu), memang
penting. Sebab mau tidak mau, dalam beberapa event (seperti olimpiade
matematika tingkat internasional) kita pasti harus menggunakan bahasa inggris
untuk membicarakan matematika. Namun, perlu diingat bahwa istilah-istilah
matematika dalam bahasa inggris bukan serta merta merupakan hasil translate
dari bahasa ibu (dalam contoh kasus ini adalah bahasa Indonesia) begitu juga
sebaliknya . Contoh : Dalam bahasa inggris terdapat istilah matematika
'incircle' yang berarti dalam bahasa Indonesia adalah 'Lingkaran dalam
segitiga'. Tapi saat kita ingin mengungkapkan 'Lingkaran luar segitiga' ke
dalam istilah bahasa inggris, kita tidak boleh langsung serta merta mengartikannya
sebagai 'excircle' ( dalam = in, luar=circle). Hal tersebut akan sangat fatal,
sebab dalam bahasa inggris 'Lingkaran luar segitiga' adalah circumcircle.

It is true that mathematics and language
can not be separated. As
already mentioned, math would be easier to learn when using a mother tongue that can then be
extended to other languages (such as English which is an international
language). However,
according to my thinking, that makes language and mathematics can not be
separated is because mathematics itself is a language. Through
its symbols, math becomes a global language (which is even more global than
English).
For example, there are two people who meet somewhere. Each of them came from Indonesia and Arab. At that time they were talking about multiply. Certainly we know that in the Indonesian language, multiply means ‘perkalian’. However, in Arabic multiply besides means as multiplication, it can also be interpreted as a hit / ‘memukul’ (in the Indonesian language is also contained English words that are ambiguous, for example, to sanction that can mean ‘mengijinkan’ (to allow) and ’melarang’ (to prohibit)). This can lead to confusion, 5 multiply 3 can be turned into 5 hit 3. It would be different story if 5 multiply 3 written in the form 5 X 3. The possibility to misinterpret is very small (even in my opinion it is not possible). This simple example can become a proof that mathematics is a global language that’s more global than English which is the international language. Mathematics is a language that can be understood by many people (even those who only understand their mother tongue, could understand the language of mathematics).
However, studying mathematics in English, (as a form of developmental math in mother tongue), is important. Because like it or not, in some event (such as an international math olympiad) we definitely have to use English to talk about math. However, keep in mind that the mathematical terms in English is not necessarily the result of translate from their mother tongue (in this case is the Indonesian language) and vice versa. Example: In English there is a mathematical term 'incircle' in Idnonesian language it means 'Lingkaran dalam segitiga'. But when we want to reveal the ‘Lingkaran luar segitiga’ into the English term, we should not interpret it directly as 'excircle' (dalam = in, luar= circle). It would be a fatal, because in English 'Lingkaran luar segitiga' is the circumcircle.
